If you have purposefully (or accidentally) “clicked” your way to this page, you are probably interested in starting a blog. Whether for fun, catharsis, information, or money – a blog is a GREAT place to express YOU! And, depending on your level of expertise, you have LOTS of options to set the stage to start posting and build a following. But, where do you start?
If your commitment level is that of a casual blogger who only wishes to post when the “feeling” hits you or you randomly think of something fantastic to talk about, then a “paid” website may not be for you. Perhaps a free blog is where you would rather begin to get your feet wet. There are plenty of options available for this type of blogger (and this just names a few of the many):
If your commitment level is a bit more solid and you are considering a real project that can either be a small or BIG money maker, paying for web hosting and your own domain is most likely the route to take.
I will say that taking this route may have a huge learning curve for people age 50 and up…especially if you are not tech-savvy. Do your research before taking the plunge. There are many options for going the “paid” route and they each have their pros and cons. Ideally, a good hosting site will explain their options well, have phenomenal support, lots of space, options to monetize, and be easy to understand when signing up. There are many to choose from but most have similar options depending on your needs, such as iPage, Bluehost, and HostGator to name a few.
Whichever route you choose, web hosting is not for the “faint of heart” or the “short on time”. But with a plan and perseverance, you can be a successful blogger.
